Q - “Do I need Road Tax for my scooter?”

A –“The DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) has confirmed that all
Class 3 scooters (capable of speeds up to 8 mph) must be registered for road use. Licensed in the exempt “disabled” taxation class and display a nil duty vehicle licence (tax disc)
Class 2 scooters are exempt.”

Q - “Do I need insurance for my scooter / power chair?”

A –“At present there is no overall legal obligation about insurance, though some finance companies insist on it. Nevertheless it is a very good idea to make sure that you are covered for fire and theft, accidental and malicious damage, and THIRD PARTY DAMAGES- just in case.”

Q- “Will I get a demonstration and advice on how to drive my scooter?”

A- “Yes! Here at Mobility Matters we always give our customers a free demonstration. (You can’t buy a pair of shoes without trying them on!) We have a large concreted area where you can safely try out a range of models to find out which one suits your own personal requirements. If you prefer we can bring a number of scooters for you to try at home (without any obligation!) - Once a purchase has been made, we will be more than happy to give advice on the driving and care of your vehicle, so that you will feel confident to drive your machine on your own.”

Q- “How do I look after my batteries?”

A- “The batteries are the life of the vehicle and they need to be regularly and correctly charged. We encounter many problems relating to a lack of knowledge of battery care. Please ask for a FREE copy of our Battery Care leaflet or ’phone us for an appointment and come and have a chat with us.

Q-“What maintenance is involved for my powered vehicle?”

A- “New vehicles require very little maintenance, other than their annual service.
Please make contact with us for specific details.

Q - Where is the best place to store my scooter?”

A – Scooters are best stored in a clean and dry place.

Q - “I would like to travel abroad; can I take my scooter with me?”

A –“ The world can be your oyster these days. Providing you pre- contact the airline or ferry company to tell them of your situation and you can give them reliable information about your vehicle’s batteries & safety specifications then Airlines and Ferry Ports will usually allow you to travel. Most sealed mobility batteries can be transported by aeroplane on proof of an IATA certificate. We would be pleased to offer you FREE advice on this subject!

Q –“Can I add power to my standard wheelchair?”

A –“Yes. Please look for the Power Pack on our Products page.”

Q –“Can I get a grant to help me to buy a stair lift?”

A –“Grants are available through local authorities for house adaptions and equipment. D.F.G’s (Disabled Facilities Grants) These are available to disabled people who own or rent their home, also to landlords on behalf of tenants. The authority may pay the grant following consultancy with the social services dept., this isn’t instant and can take a number of months. The process usually begins with a referral from your G.P. to an Occupational Therapist”.

Q –“My stairs are curved, can I have a stair lift fitted?”

A –“Yes curved stair lifts can be fitted. They are made to measure especially for your stair layout. Curved stair lifts are more expensive than the straight type. Please see our products page and contact us for more details.

Q – “What would happen if there was a power cut while I was on my stair lift?”

A – “The Stair Lifts we supply provide emergency back-up through a continually charged battery operated system. This will ensure a number of safe journeys up and downstairs in the event of a power cut. They are made to the relevant British Standard.
